Yesterday on the 20th of November, the Redpepper tabloid ran a story claiming that the President Yoweri Museveni was plotting to overthrow Rwanda’s president Paul Kagame.
The story was reminiscent of the stories that run in the 1990s claiming plots and counterplots being run by the two countries against each other.
However, this story which drew a strongly worded response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs appears to have caused trouble for the Tabloid.
The Namanve based newspaper has been ordered closed after an earlier siege by security personnel this afternoon.
According to the RedPepper’s Director Arinaitwe Rugyendo, the siege was staged by the Counterterrorism unit of police and the Kampala metropolitan police command
Computers were taken, and workers were asked to surrender their phones and electronic gadgets.
Immediately after surrendering items, the staff at red pepper were ordered to vacate the premises
In a statement rubbishing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged citizens to ignore the Redpepper.
”The Ministry informs the citizens of both Uganda and Rwanda that the continuous innuendo by the likes of “Rushyashya” and various other media outlets both in Uganda and Rwanda, including the Red Pepper is mischievous at best, irresponsible at worst and meant to sow discord between our two sister nations. The Ministry condemns such abuse of the communication platforms they are privileged to manage”
However, suspicions that all is not well between Rwanda and Uganda have been high ever since senior police officers allied to Police Chief General Kale Kayihura were arrested and accused of Kidnapping Rwandan political dissidents and deporting them back to Rwanda.
