Last Friday, The African Court on Human and People’s right ruled in favor of Victoire Ingabire (A Rwandan Opposition leader) who is languishing in jail after being sentenced for fifteen years by the Rwandan Highest Court. Among the charges that Ingabire was convicted of were that she minimized the Rwandan Genocide of 1994 where hundreds of thousands of Tutsis and some Hutus were killed.
The accusation was trigerred by her statement at GISOZI Memorial site, where she recognized that Tutsis were dead and are remembered, but Hutus who died during the same period of time are NOT remembered/recognized. Caroline Buisman took the case to the African Court on Human and People’s rights that sits in Arusha Tanzania, and won. We will ask her what it means for her, Ingabire, and for other Rwandans in a similar position.
It should be noted that Caroline Buisman was part of the Legal Team that defended successfully Gen Kabirigi, who was acquited of crimes of Genocide against the Tutsis.
